The Guardian - A Must See Movie

Submitted by ChuckNugent on Fri, 2006-10-06 21:24. :: Movies

If you are looking for an action drama in which the main
characters are forced to overcome both internal and external obstacles to reach
their dreams then look no further than the recently released (September 2006)
movie, The Guardian, staring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher.

This is the story of the training of the U.S. Coast Guard's rescue
swimmers.  These are men and women who jump from Coast Guard rescue helicopters
into stormy seas to rescue stranded seafarers.  The job is very dangerous with
swimmers having to jump, without a parachute, from helicopters hovering at
heights of up to 50 feet above the water's surface.  As if that wasn't enough,
the rescues are usually done in the midst of violent storms and into seas strewn
with the wreckage of a ship.  Skill, strength, a cool head, team work and
courage are all needed in great quantities.

The Story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Submitted by ChuckNugent on Fri, 2006-10-06 20:08. :: Movies | Music | Stories

Fate is a funny thing.  A person can focus on the big things only to
see those achievements largely forgotten as people remember them for
something that, at the time it was accomplished, seemed small and
inconsequential.  Other times fate will strike a person who possesses
only modest goals and catapult that person's creation to greatness.Take Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Mention his name at Christmas time and practically everyone in the
world knows his story.  But, where did Rudolph come from?

Rumor Has It... - A Sexy Movie without Sex

Submitted by ChuckNugent on Sun, 2006-10-01 21:12. :: Blogging | Movies

The movie Rumor Has It...,
staring Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner, is a delightful comedy
about love and sex.  However, even though the central theme is sex, the
movie not only artfully has the characters tiptoe around discussing the
subject, it also has only two bedroom scenes that are sexually charged
but lack any on screen depiction of sex.  Like the 1968 movie, Prudence and the Pill, staring David Niven, the viewers know what is going on in the bedroom but have use their imagination to visualize the action.

Riots in Paris and the Movie Hate: La Haine

Riots in Paris and the Movie Hate: La Haine

The Riots that began in November 2005 in Clichy-Sous-Bois, north-east of Paris, were sparked by the deaths of two teenage boys who were accidentally electrocuted as they ran away from the French police in a power substation, assuming that the police wanted to apprehend them (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml). Because the teenagers were of a visible racial minority, racial tensions against the white French police fueled the breakout of massive rioting across France for several days non-stop. Retaliation against police and French citizenry has stemmed from the ongoing systemic discrimination that racial minorities who live in France have had to endure for years.

Why did the Manson Family do what they did? If you are taking a Criminology Course, or are just plain interested in Crime and Deviance, read the attached group discussion I had with a group of class members that had to discuss theories as to Why The Mansons committed such brutal murders.

The Media’s Role in Serial Killer Investigations

Mass media reflects society’s lack of understanding in the occurrence of serial murder crimes. Through methods of over-proliferation, mass media contributes to the social construction of violent crimes. Serial killer crimes motivate both the police taskforce and journalists to investigate these crimes in an attempt to understand why these crimes happen. Since mass media controls what is reported in society, there is the risk that certain biases that are infused in their reports about serial murders can be projected to a degree where misinformation can result about the crime. This can distort the public’s understanding about serial murders rather than inform the public about these types of crime. In respect to serial murder cases, the media plays a role in sensationalizing violent crime when they over-report a case, or over-estimate the prevalence of violent crime which can offer us a distorted stereotype of offenders (Linden, 112). Due to the media’s ability to influence the information they transmit to the public, I think that they hold a sense of accountability for society’s lack of understanding towards serial murder and other violent crimes. In this essay, I will explore how the media sensationalizes serial killing crimes in order to analyze society’s fear of anonymous victimization.
