How does Your Garden Grow?

Submitted by anjelica on Sat, 2006-06-10 08:00. :: Blogging

Alright, does anyone out there have a garden this year?   hello hellowww  hellllllooooooo???

We havent had a garden since way before the children were born, many many years ago (who has time for that anymore?)  and the last time we had one we lived at a feedlot, im tellin ya the land was fertile! lol we had a very productive garden.  ok that was 20 years ago, since then i have only grown a couple tomato and green pepper plants.  BUT.........

THIS YEAR........  OMG what was i thinking....

The ground here is like clay, HARD, the water here is short... HA! we have ran out in the well a couple of times since we moved in (three months ago), guess its not very deep or some dumb thing... so not like i can just water to my hearts content and then still expect to get a shower, and it NEVER rains here, whats up with that anyway?  That brings me to another thought... this yard is just FILLED with trees and tons of lilac bushes, we had some small dry lilacs earlier, but never rain and a freeze after they started blooming, i hope next year is better, i would love to see them in full boom and smell them too!  our ones at our other house always bloomed for a long period of time...

Back to that garden thing.  I have planted a LOT of things that i have never planted before, so am kinda anxious to see if anything comes up? *g*  and would love your views and experiences!

We have, Red Potatoes, Radishes, bush beans and pole beans, Indian Corn (and still hoping to get some sweet corn from somewhere to put in for a late crop) TONS of Tomatoes and Green bell peppers.  I wanted some red peppers to put in also, but havent been able to find any plants anywhere.  Brussel sprouts, (tis my first time with that and am quite curious to see how that turns out.) cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, zuccini (first time with ALL of those also) cucumber, watermelon, a few varities of squash, and pumpkin.  Oh yeah,,, and asparagus (not sure that is going to pan out, it was in the box for a long time before we got it planted.)

I also planted a peach tree, 5 raspberry sticks, LOL altho 4 of them actually got some leaves, i would have never guessed from the shape they were in. a green grape and a purple grape, strawberries and a blueberry (stick) (not sure he is going to come out of his stupor).

Also tons of various plants/flowers... in the ground, in planters and in the house.

I have also planted a lot of fresh herbs, first time doing this also, im way excited about that!  not cause i cook or anything.... AND some catnip, i think my lil kitties are gonna like that!  or at least i hope so, i KNOW my cat at the daycare would think he had died and gone to heaven. RIght now i just have a small, injured, spayed female and two very frightened wild kittens.

I am looking for your experiences and advice!

Seems like it was just planting time and here we are having FROST already.  I hope that by next spring i will be back in the mood.  I did plant some more daffodils, tulips, daylillies and mums.  I'm happy.  I added bone meal just for fun.   I had planted tomatoes in pots this year to save on the weeding, but they really did not do too well.  I think we had 4 tomatoes off those that you and I split in ..........what was that? April? MAy?  The thing I love about this end of the state is the rain.  I was telling someone the other day, that I have not watered my yard in at least two years and it's still green.  My neighbors have underground sprinklers, but I don't know why.  I was so cold today.  I am not ready for winter.

Hope your brithday was great! Miss ya.

I have been gardening for many years......older than the dirt I play in,is what I always say LOL!  I am happiest when my hands are dirty.  But it can be a little embarassing when meeting new people, they want to know why my hands are that color.

Some hints and tips I learned along time ago.  Save all your cans.  The bigger the better.  Use an awl or screwdriver to make holes at the bottom rim.  About 1/2 inch up.  Make about 5 or 6 all the way around. Put these cans around your plants about 3" into the ground.  When it does rain, the cans collect the water and help retain moisture around the plant when there is none, by letting it out a little at a time.

If you want, check out the site I am starting.  It's new and a freebie, so bear with me.  But there are some tips there that I use all the time.

The herb thing......I could go on for hours about that. So not to bore you with my passions, I will just say, they are so much more than just a kitchen additive.

Goodluck

Julie, i PROMISE you wont bore me! lol any and ALL help and advice, experiences are needed!! :-))  would love desperately to hear more.

most of what i planted (from seed and otherwise) is really sprouting and growing "like a weed" :-P

my cilantro went into overkill between the heat, the hail and the sudden, BRIEF downpoar of rain.  everything else seemed to have "popped" back up, except it....  *sobbing*  I was really looking forward to it for salsa!

I am a pack ratr but horrible about saving things? HA, BUT.... my dear father saves all their cans (guess he knows me too well) and gives them to me at garden time.  I put them around definitely all the tomatoes and peppers, this year i put all the extras i had around other plants, especially when they were young.  The cans area also supposed to help prevent cutworms??  and you are so right about the moisture thing!  something we get very little of around here!

on teh cans however, i have never drilled holes in teh botom of them before i bury them?  we do leave the tops hanging on (not by much) but enough to cover the plants when they are little if there is hail or high winds...

Where is your site?  I would love to check it out!

Like I said, this is a work in progress and on a free hosting system, so just bear with me........but click the link below and it will take you to it.  I update it all the time, so there is something new almost every day        ('cept last week when i was on vacation)      right now my new favorite toy is water fountains.  I like making them.........but using the trial and error method for set up and water flow, sometimes it can get a little wet! lol

so check it out and tell me what you think

enjoy
